MT5 Beginner’s Guide: How to Set Up MetaTrader 5 for Forex Trading

MetaTrader 5 platform interface overview

MetaTrader 5 is the most popular trading platform in forex, and for good reason. It’s free, it’s powerful, and every major broker supports it. But when you open it for the first time, it can feel overwhelming — windows everywhere, buttons you don’t recognize, charts you can’t figure out how to customize.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know to get MT5 set up and ready for trading. No jargon, no assumptions, just clear step-by-step instructions.

First Things First: Download the Right Version

Before you do anything else, make sure you’re downloading MT5 from the right place. Don’t go to some random website — get it from either your broker’s website or directly from MetaQuotes (the company that makes MT5).

Why does it matter? Because some third-party “MT5 downloads” come with extra stuff you don’t want — adware, modified EAs, altered settings. Stick to the official sources.

Once you download and install it, open it up. You’ll see the default layout: a big chart in the middle, Market Watch on the left, Navigator on the right, and Toolbox at the bottom. Let’s configure each one.

Step 1: Connect Your Broker Account

This is the first thing to do. You can’t do anything useful in MT5 until you’re connected to your broker’s server.

  1. Go to File → Open an Account if you’re creating a new account, or File → Login to Trade Account if you already have one
  2. Find your broker in the list (or enter the server address if you know it)
  3. Enter your login, password, and select the server
  4. Click OK

If the connection works, you’ll see your account balance and equity in the “Navigator” panel under “Accounts.” The connection status in the bottom-right corner of the screen should show your broker name and a green dot.

Pro tip: Start with a demo account first. You can practice everything in this guide without risking real money.

Step 2: Customize the Chart Layout

The default MT5 chart is… fine. But we can make it better. Here’s how I set up my charts:

Change the template:
1. Right-click on the chart → Template → Save Template
2. First, let’s customize it, then we’ll save it

Adjust the chart colors:
1. Right-click on the chart → Properties (or press F8)
2. Go to the Colors tab
3. I use a white background with black candles for clarity, but dark theme is also popular
4. Set Bullish candle to green (or whatever color you prefer for up candles)
5. Set Bearish candle to red (for down candles)
6. Set Grid to a light gray (you want the grid visible but not distracting)

Set the timeframe:
– The toolbar at the top has buttons for M1, M5, M15, M30, H1, H4, D1, W1, MN
– Click the one you use most often (I recommend starting with H4 or D1 for beginners)

Remove the default indicators:
– MT5 sometimes loads Moving Average by default. If you don’t want it, right-click it on the chart and press Delete.

Once it looks the way you want, go back to Template → Save Template and name it “Default” or whatever you like. Now any new chart you open will use this template automatically.

Step 3: Set Up Your Watchlist

The Market Watch panel (usually on the left side) shows all the symbols your broker offers. But you don’t need all of them — most people only trade 3-10 pairs.

To hide symbols you don’t use:
1. Right-click in the Market Watch window
2. Uncheck any pairs you don’t trade (just click the eye icon to hide/show)
3. Or right-click → Symbols to manage the full list

I keep only 8-10 symbols in my watchlist: XAUUSD, EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, GBPJPY, EURJPY, USDCAD, and AUDUSD. Everything else is hidden. Less clutter = better focus.

To add a new chart from Market Watch:
– Just drag a symbol from Market Watch onto an existing chart, or double-click it to open a new chart window.

Step 4: Add Your Favorite Indicators

MT5 comes with dozens of built-in indicators. You don’t need most of them, but here’s how to add the useful ones:

  1. Go to the Navigator panel (right side)
  2. Expand the Indicators folder
  3. Drag the indicator you want onto your chart
  4. A settings window will pop up — adjust the parameters and click OK

My recommended indicator setup for beginners:
– Add Moving Average (exponential, period 20, apply to close)
– Add Relative Strength Index (period 14, apply to close)
– Add Bollinger Bands (period 20, deviation 2)

That’s it. Three indicators. You can add more later if you need them, but start simple.

Step 5: Place Your First Trade (Demo Account!)

OK, you’ve got your chart set up. Let’s walk through placing a trade.

The fast way (market order):
1. Right-click on the chart → Trading → New Order (or press F9)
2. The Order window opens
3. Make sure the right symbol is selected
4. Set your Volume (lot size — start with 0.01 on demo!)
5. Click Buy by… for a long position or Sell by… for a short position
6. Done — the trade is now open

The smarter way (pending order with stop loss):
1. Press F9 to open the Order window
2. Change Type from “Market Execution” to “Pending Order”
3. Select the order type (Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop, Sell Stop)
4. Enter the Price where you want the order to trigger
5. Enter your Stop Loss and Take Profit levels
6. Set your Volume
7. Click Place

This is the way to trade — decide your entry, stop, and target all at once before you’re in the trade. Never enter a trade without knowing where you’ll get out if you’re wrong.

Step 6: Essential Settings to Change

A few settings changes that make MT5 much better to use:

1. Turn on one-click trading:
– Go to Tools → Options → Trade
– Check “One Click Trading”
– Now you can buy/sell directly from the chart with one click. Use with caution.

2. Change max bars on chart:
– Go to Tools → Options → Charts
– Set “Max bars in chart” to 100,000 (the max)
– This gives you more historical data to work with

3. Set up alerts:
– You can set price alerts by right-clicking on a chart level → Alert
– MT5 will notify you when price hits that level, so you don’t have to stare at the screen all day

Step 7: Save Your Workspace

Once everything is set up just how you like it — charts open, indicators on, panels in the right places — save your workspace:

  1. Go to File → Profiles → Save Profile As
  2. Name it “My Workspace” or whatever
  3. Now if MT5 crashes or you open it on a different computer, you can load your exact layout in one click

Final Tips for New MT5 Users

  • Right-click everything. MT5 has a lot of features hidden in right-click menus. If you’re wondering how to do something, right-click first.
  • Learn the keyboard shortcuts. F9 for new order, F8 for chart properties, Ctrl+F for crosshair, Home/End to zoom. They save time.
  • Don’t install every EA you find. Expert Advisors (automated trading systems) are a huge rabbit hole. Start with manual trading, learn how the market works, then explore EAs if you’re interested.
  • Practice on demo first. I know I’ve said this already, but it’s worth repeating. Everything in this guide can — and should — be practiced on a demo account before you risk real money.

MetaTrader 5 is a deep platform — you could use it for years and still discover new features. But you don’t need to know everything to get started. Set up your charts, learn the basics, and the rest will come naturally as you need it.
