Forex Swap Rates Explained: Overnight Interest, the Triple Wednesday Rule and the Real Cost of Holding XAUUSD

Forex swap overnight interest calculation and triple Wednesday rule illustration

The short answer: a swap is the interest-rate differential settled whenever you hold a position past your broker’s daily cutoff — and Wednesday is charged triple to cover the weekend. At current rates, a 1-lot XAUUSD long costs about $54 per night, which adds up to more than $2,000 a month.

This matters more today than it has in years. On September 16 the Fed hiked 25bp to 3.75%–4.00% — its first increase since July 2023 — and the September dot plot points to one more move toward 4.00%–4.25%. The higher dollar rates go, the more expensive it gets to finance a position in gold, an asset that pays zero yield. What used to be pocket change now decides whether a swing trade makes money.

What a Swap Actually Is

A swap — called “rollover” or shown as storage/swap in MT4 — is an interest differential settlement. Buying one currency always means selling another. You earn interest on the currency you bought and pay interest on the one you sold; the swap is the net of those two legs, settled every night.

Spot FX runs on T+2 settlement: a position opened Monday settles Wednesday. Hold past your broker’s cutoff (00:00 server time) and the platform automatically pushes your settlement date out one day while charging or crediting that day’s interest differential. That daily push is the rollover.

Gold takes this to an extreme. A long XAUUSD position is effectively “borrow dollars, buy metal.” Gold yields nothing, so after the broker adds its markup, the interest differential is negative almost all the time — longs pay, every single night.

How Swaps Are Calculated: A Real XAUUSD Example

The formula is simple: nightly swap ≈ position notional × annualized rate differential ÷ 365. The messy part is that every broker adds its own markup, so always check the actual figure in your platform’s contract specification before sizing a trade.

Here’s the math at current rates, so the scale of this cost sinks in:

Item Value
Contract size 100 oz per lot
Current gold price $4,159
Notional per lot $415,900
Annualized financing rate (benchmark 3.75%–4.00% + broker markup) ~4.75%
Nightly swap ($415,900 × 4.75% ÷ 365) ~$54
Triple Wednesday charge ~$162

Notice what drives this number: lot size, not account size. A 0.1-lot position pays about $5.40 a night, one lot pays $54, five lots pay $270. Leverage doesn’t just magnify your P&L — it magnifies the rent you pay every night whether price moves or not.

Why Wednesday Is Charged Triple

The triple charge comes straight from the T+2 settlement calendar. A position still open at Wednesday’s cutoff has its settlement date jump from Friday to Monday, spanning Saturday and Sunday. The broker therefore settles three days of interest in one hit, covering the whole weekend.

The same logic explains the rest of the week: holding through Friday’s cutoff only costs 1x, because settlement moves from Tuesday to Wednesday with no weekend in between. Around public holidays, brokers pre-charge multiple days at once — if your swap suddenly spikes before a holiday, that’s why.

The Real Cost of Holding Gold in a Hiking Cycle

Stretch $54 a night across a calendar — with one triple Wednesday per week baked in — and the carrying cost of a position gets uncomfortable fast:

Holding Period Swap Cost (1-lot long) Equivalent Gold Move
1 week ~$430 $4.3/oz
1 month ~$2,050 $20.5/oz
3 months ~$5,600 $56/oz

In trading terms: hold a 1-lot long for a month and gold must rally $20.5 just for you to break even on financing. A $10,000 account holding a 0.5-lot long pays roughly $1,030 a month — 10.3% of the account. You can be right on direction, hold too long, and still lose money.

The comparison across instruments makes it starker. The same $415,900 of exposure through a gold ETF like GLD costs 0.4% a year in management fees — about $139 a month, or one-fifteenth of the CFD swap. According to World Gold Council data, global gold ETFs have seen sustained inflows through 2026; in a high-rate world, institutions migrating toward cheaper vehicles is a big part of that story.

How to Check Your Swap — and 5 Ways to Fight It

First, learn to read the number. In MT4, right-click the symbol in Market Watch, choose “Specification,” and find “Swap long” and “Swap short.” The unit may be points or account currency — convert it to dollars per lot before you ever enter a trade.

Tactic one: trade intraday. Close before the cutoff (00:00 server time) and you never pay a cent of swap. In a high-rate era, that’s a genuine structural edge for day traders.

Tactic two: swap-free accounts. Some brokers offer Islamic accounts with no overnight interest, but most cap holding periods (commonly 7–14 days) or recover the cost through admin fees and wider spreads. Read the fine print.

Tactic three: build the swap into your system. For swing trades, bake the ~$2,050 monthly carry into your expectancy before entry — stops and targets must clear this hurdle, or your edge quietly turns negative.

Tactic four: switch instruments for long-term exposure. Gold futures charge no daily swap (the cost shows up as roll contango instead), and gold ETFs cost 0.4% a year. For holds beyond two weeks, the CFD is usually the wrong tool.

Tactic five: respect Wednesday. Holding through Wednesday’s cutoff costs three days in one night. Swing traders can flatten before the cutoff and re-enter Thursday — paying one spread to save two days of interest is usually a good trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what time is the swap charged?

At your broker’s daily cutoff — typically 00:00 MT4 server time (5:00 p.m. New York). If you hold at that instant, you’re charged, even by a second. Close one minute before and you pay nothing at all.

Why is my swap negative on both longs and shorts?

Because brokers add a markup to the raw interest differential to cover funding costs and risk. After markup, both sides of a zero-yield asset like gold usually come out negative. Only a handful of high-yield currency pairs still pay positive carry on the long side.

How many days am I charged for holding over the weekend?

Zero extra days — Saturday and Sunday are not charged day by day. The weekend is already covered by Wednesday’s triple charge. Holding through Friday’s cutoff costs just 1x, a detail beginners constantly get wrong.

Are swap-free accounts really free?

Not quite. Most cap how long you can hold (commonly 7–14 days) before admin fees kick in, and some compensate through wider spreads or restricted instruments. Only genuinely short holding periods come close to truly free.

How do I cut carrying costs on a long-term gold view?

Use CFDs for the short game and switch vehicles for the long game. Per lot of notional: CFD swaps run about $2,050 a month, futures carry no daily swap (just roll contango), and GLD costs roughly $139 a month. Beyond a two-week horizon, seriously consider switching.
